He meandered to the water’s edge and saw a lone gosling shivering on the bank without any sign of its mama. It was nearly blinding, and Tim squinted until his eyes adjusted to the change. A deep sense of peace was radiating through him when he stumbled upon a back exit to the gardens.Ī pond sprawled before him, rays of sun glinting off of the water. He could see the toads hiding away under the plants, and the butterflies flying delicately overhead. It was clearly meant to be enjoyed in human form, but Tim liked the view from his shorter wolf stature. Paths crossed through the flowerbeds in intricate designs. Stumbling again to his paws, Tim continued to examine the space, stopping to smell and gaze to his heart’s content. The sneeze that shuddered through his body blew him off his paws and onto his butt, dazing him for a few seconds before a delighted grin lit his face. He hadn’t expected it to tickle his sinuses so much, and he scrunched his nose as he backed away. Scampering up to the first one he could reach, Tim stuck his snout directly into the closest mass of petals. The irises towered over him, but the daffodils were the perfect height to sniff. A light breeze wafted the smell of the garden to his nose, and Tim sprung to his paws to follow it. They created a pretty display of reds, yellows, and purples, perfectly curated and nurtured. The Waynes’ garden-probably Alfred’s garden if he were honest-was beginning to bloom with daffodils, tulips, and irises. There were so many beautiful flowers in the world, but Tim loved dandelions the most they grew relentlessly with a vivacity that had always astounded him, unabashed about the space they took up. He picked a few dandelions with his teeth, sniffing them lightly. Tim wriggled around on the ground in sheer joy, the blades of grass scratching pleasantly at his back. Tail wagging eagerly, he ran to the middle of the yard and threw himself down on the grass with his feet in the air. Once his feet hit the grass Tim shifted to his wolf form, loving the feeling of the plush grass on his paws.

Giving Damian a quick hug, Tim crossed the doorway and into the back yard.

Damian had just taught him how to sneak out! Seeing Tim’s excited demeanor, the other boy’s smile turned brighter and more earnest. Tim had only seen the door open a few times, but the hinges always made a hellacious groan. Putting his hand on the doorknob, Damian first turned the handle and then lifted the door up to take the pressure off the hinges. Tipping his head in confusion, Tim watched as Damian walked to the double doors and gestured for him to watch him closely. Tim was about to apologize when Damian’s lips quirked up into the shadow of a smile, and put a finger to his lips. Damian stood a few feet away with his arms crossed, posture relaxed the arch in his brow spoke for itself. Every muscle in his body stiffened immediately at the sound, and Tim sported a guilty look on his face. Someone cleared their throat from behind him. Pristine grass was carpeted just on the other side of the door it was so tempting to roll around in and. Human for the moment, Tim slipped silently from the den and walked to the back doors. Fresh air was good for one’s health, and it had been a week and half since he had gotten sick. Jason had gone to help Alfred make lunch a few minutes before… surely he wouldn’t mind if Tim went outside for a few minutes. If something happened to him in the backyard, he was within shouting distance of someone who could help. His parents had told him the harsh realities of nature, but Tim wouldn’t technically be alone. When he was alone, open spaces were strictly forbidden to him because it made him vulnerable to predators.

In fairness, he barely had any stamina in the aftermath of his illness, but the Wayne garden and pond looked so inviting. Tim loved hanging out with the Waynes, he did, but he also wanted to go outside to explore! Alfred, and Jason more so, insisted that he needed to rest for at least a week after his fever had broken.
